PELHAM, N.Y. -- The Picture House Regional Film Center in Pelham will present an advance screening of the new film "Southside with You" on Wednesday, Aug. 24.
Inspired by President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama’s first date, "Southside with You" recounts the eventful summer day in 1989 when a charming young law associate named Barack Obama (Parker Sawyers) tries to woo reluctant attorney Michelle Robinson (Tika Sumpter) during an epic daylong date that takes them from the Art Institute of Chicago to a screening of Spike Lee’s "Do the Right Thing" to a sweet first kiss outside an ice cream parlor.
"Southside with You" was written, directed and produced by Richard Tanne and is the filmmaker’s directorial debut.
The movie’s executive producer is critically acclaimed, multiple award-winning, platinum-selling singer-songwriter John Legend. Legend also oversees the music in the film.
The film premiered to critical acclaim at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival where it was nominated for a Grand Jury Prize. Since then, "Southside with You" has been featured at a number of film festivals, including the San Francisco International Film Festival and the Maui Film Festival, where it won Best First Narrative Feature.
Variety says of the film: “to the degree that one can separate aesthetics from politics, it’s hard not to come away from the film without an essential respect for the restraint and quiet daring of Tanne’s approach.”
Tickets to the special advance screening are $15 for adults and $12 for students, seniors and members of the Picture House Regional Film Center.
Tickets can be purchased here or at or at the box office: 175 Wolfs Lane, Pelham. The screening will begin at 7:30 p.m.
