Summer's Hot Start Boosts Two Pelham Businesses

PELHAM, N.Y. – Most Pelham residents aren't exactly enjoying the heat , but two village business owners are reaping the rewards of the record June temperatures.

“Very busy. I love the heat,” said Tiso Appliances owner Peter Camardella, who has sold 300 air conditioners ranging from $199 to $2,000. “I want it like this every day.”

Workers from the 60-year-old Wolfs Lane business have gone on about 50 air-conditioner repair trips, Camardella said. They have been able to fix the air conditioners “most of the time unless it’s too much money,” he said. That's when they decide to buy a new one, said Camardella, who has owned the business for 20 years.

Over at Wise Hardware on Fifth Avenue, Bill Weinblatt has been selling a “more than normal” amount of fans for June.

The two businesses suffered in sales during the light winter and both men are hoping a hot summer will turn around their year.

“We struggle during the winter time and this carries us through,” said Camardella. Weinblatt, who has owned Wise Hardware for 28 years, is hoping “for a good summer” to “sell garden supplies and all that good stuff.”

Not every village resident agreed with Camardella and Weinblatt’s plea for continued hot weather, including 81-year-old Richie Bell.

“I like the warm weather better than the cold weather, but this is too hot for people, especially older people – so we got to have it a little cooler,” said Bell, who owns Village Wine and Liquor and Pelham Produce.

The heat actually feels like 100 degrees because of the 38 percent humidity, according to Weather.com . Con Edison has offered tips on dealing with the heat.

The forecast for Pelham is for scattered showers and thunderstorms by mid-evening Thursday and temperature dipping to the mid-80s. The rain was expected to continue Friday night, with a daytime high of 90 and a low of 70. The temperature during the weekend will cool down, with highs of 86 forecast Saturday and 83 on Sunday. Both days are expected to have lows in the 60s and be partly cloudy. The temperature will dip to 75 on Monday with a 60 percent chance of scattered thunderstorms.
